Spenderella, Discoveries have value chance in Coronation

Bay Bridge has the pace advantage in the Prince of Wales's

Three-year-old fillies take center stage at Royal Ascot on Friday, June 17, for the Coronation Stakes (G1)! Contested at a mile over the round course, the Coronation drew a competitive field of twelve sophomore fillies to run for a £500,000 purse. The race will be run as the fourth of seven on the Friday card, and with such a big field, it should be one of the top betting races of the meeting!

Coronation Stakes Field

This is the official field for the 2022 Coronation Stakes, including betting numbers, post positions, trainers, and jockeys. Keep in mind that at Royal Ascot, as with most major European tracks, a horse’s post position is not necessarily the same as their betting number.

  1. Cachet (George Boughey/James Doyle) – Post 9
  2. Discoveries (Jessica Harrington/Shane Foley) – Post 10
  3. Grande Dame (John & Thady Gosden/Jamie Spencer) – Post 2
  4. Honey Girl (Henry de Bromhead/Colin Keane) – Post 11
  5. Inspiral (John & Thady Gosden/Frankie Dettori) – Post 5
  6. Mangoustine (Mikel Delzangles/Gerald Mosse) – Post 1
  7. Pizza Bianca (Christophe Clement/Jose Ortiz) – Post 7
  8. Prosperous Voyage (Ralph Beckett/Rob Hornby) – Post 12
  9. Rolling the Dice (Hilal Kobeissi/Marco Ghiani) – Post 3
  10. Sandrine (Andrew Balding/David Probert) – Post 6
  11. Spendarella (Graham Motion/William Buick) – Post 8
  12. Tenebrism (Aidan O’Brien/Ryan Moore) – Post 4

As race day draws closer, keep an eye on the betting odds at your sportsbook of choice. The odds will fluctuate as post time gets closer. However, unlike at the racetrack, betting online allows you to lock in the best odds the moment you bet. That means, when you see your racebook offer an overlay on a horse you like, you can place your bet and be confident about your return when your horse wins!

Coronation Stakes Handicapping

Now that you have your online betting account all set up, it is time to meet the top contenders in the 2022 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Coronation Stakes Favorites

Inspiral comes into the Coronation undefeated, though she has not raced since last October. Her form at two was good, with blowout victories at a mile in both the Fillies’ Mile (G1) and May Hill (G2) last year. The lively early pace should suit her, as well. The major drawback is the price; there are many quality contenders and it’s hard to take a short price before she proves she trained on.

Although Cachet was beaten at Longchamp last out, the ground was rain-affected. Her better races have come over dry ground, which she will get at Royal Ascot. She usually sets the pace, which may pose a problem as there is so much speed in this race. At least she did prove three starts back that she can also win from just off the running.

Discoveries is one with an excellent chance to bounce back at an appealing price. Though she was well beaten in the 1,000 Guineas last time out, it was her first start off a layoff, and she really did not wake up last year until the second off the layoff. This was almost certainly the real goal: her connections won this race in 2018 with her sister Alpha Centauri and also in 2020 with her half-sister Alpine Star.

Coronation Stakes Price Horses

Spendarella gets a class test, as she tries Group 1 company for the first time in the Coronation. However, she dazzled in the Appalachian last out. She led, settled back, and kicked on to win impressively. That suggests that she has that dangerous combination of tactical speed and a sharp finishing kick, something that makes her a win candidate at a great price.

Although Prosperous Voyage has not won at the top level yet, she repeatedly gets underneath shares against the horses she will see here in the Coronation. This pace-versatile filly should be able to run to that standard once again, and though it is hard to figure that she won’t find a few too good again, her consistency makes her a contender for another piece of the purse.
