Breeders’ Cup 2023 Picks & Odds

California’s top horse race betting event of the year is the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park. And, one of the most exciting races of the weekend is the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) on Saturday, November 4. The 1 ⅛-mile dirt race drew the top two-turn dirt fillies and mares in the world to vie for a prize that has been won by no less than Zenyatta and Beholder.

The likely favorite in the 2023 edition of the Distaff is Idiomatic, a filly who has shown sharp improvement in her last two starts. However, she faces tough competition like perennial divisional star Clairiere, Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous, and California divisional leader Adare Manor.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Handicapping

You have your betting account and you’ve seen the field. Now, it is time to dive in and get to know the major contenders in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff!

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Top Contenders

Idiomatic comes into the Distaff in sparkling form, and there is every reason for her to hold it in the Breeders’ Cup. Though she has won her last two on the lead and the pace looks like it will be sharply contested, she has won others from just off the pace. This means she has some versatility to work out the right trip, in addition to having the best recent form against the toughest company.

If anyone upsets the apple cart, look to Pretty Mischievous. The Kentucky Oaks winner faces older mares for the first time, but has been beating horses her own age in fast enough fashion to fit well. She is a versatile and reliable off-pace type, but she does not have to drop too far off, important at Santa Anita even if the pace is hot. And, she’ll probably be overlaid off a defeat when the pace set up poorly last out.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Exotics

Clairiere comes in off of a disappointment in the Personal Ensign (G1) last out at Saratoga…but that was the case last year, too, and she ran a blinder to be a close third in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Though she often does not get all the way there, especially over speed-favoring tracks, the pace sets up beautifully for her and she should find the frame once again.

The California home team has a pair of live contenders for the exotics, too. Desert Dawn is the better-priced of them. Though she has been running second and third over and over behind Adare Manor this year, she has consistently been running well and this bigger field with a more contested pace means Desert Dawn is going to get a better setup. That could mean a place on the podium.

The aforementioned Adare Manor has been the leader of the California set all year. However, she faces a deeper field, and she will be one of the horses battling out on or near the front. What gives her a chance to hang around for exotics is the possibility that she sits near the pace; she has been able to rate. But, at such a likely short price, she will be an underlay on the win end against this deeper group.
