Breeders’ Stakes 2023 Betting Picks

The race is one of the top betting races of the year, both because of the class and because of the uniqueness of the handicapping opportunity. After all, none of the runners has tried a mile and a half on the lawn before. Also, with two different horses winning the first two legs of the Canadian Triple Crown, the betting board should be wide open.

Breeders’ Stakes Handicapping

With your betting account all set up, it is time to start diving into the Breeders’ Stakes. These are the key contenders who should be on your tickets:

Breeders’ Stakes Best Bet

Tito’s Calling is the best bet for the Breeders’ Stakes. Though she is a filly facing males for the first time, her last race stands out because she was able to rally into a sluggish pace and win with complete authority going 1 ¼ miles on grass. In a race where the pace will be similarly slow? As long as she stays the extra furlong, the same trip can make her a winner again.

Breeders’ Stakes Favorites

The horse who will probably set that slow pace in the Breeders’ is the same one who got away doing the same thing in the King’s Plate: Paramount Prince. The biggest question with him is the surface, as he has never tried the turf before. However, horses who run well on Tapeta can often translate that form to turf. If he can, he has a good chance to set the pace and be tough to pass in the end.

Even though Wickenheiser could not catch Tito’s Calling last out in the Wonder Where, she has upside to improve. For one, her start wasn’t great in that race, so she could either sit closer or finish even better if she comes away better. Furthermore, she has an appealing long-distance grass pedigree, meaning she could be in a great position to run down the horses who find the 1 ½-mile trip of the Breeders’ beyond their abilities.

Breeders’ Stakes Exotics Horses

Make sure to consider long shot British Artillery for exotics in the Breeders’. Though he has class to prove, he has several reasons to rise to the challenge. First of all, he has perhaps the best long-distance turf pedigree in the field. Furthermore, he is one of the few with enough early speed to situate himself near Paramount Prince early. If he can sit near the pace and the pacesetter can’t stay the trip, he may be the beneficiary at huge odds.

Elysian Field may find it tough to win the Breeders’, as she’ll be in the same kind of pace trouble she was in when she ran second in the King’s Plate. However, she ran a good race there and she was not losing ground on Paramount Prince down the lane. With a slow pace likely again, she may work out the same kind of trip: track the pace, make a run, and chase honestly for a place in the exotics.
