2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup Favorites

Bravemansgame has won six of his last seven, and has been razor-sharp in two starts since having wind surgery. Though he hasn’t yet run a chase at Cheltenham, he looked a proper Grade 1 chaser when thrashing Royale Pagaille in the King George VI (G1) last year and this looks like the right time to try him against the best of the best at Cheltenham.

Galopin des Champs, the likely favorite, is trainer Willie Mullins’ leading hope. He won the Irish Gold Cup (G1) last out and has won seven of his last eight, his only stumble being when he fell at Cheltenham last year, over the last fence. Despite his sparkling form through this year’s campaign, he still carries seven pounds less than A Plus Tard, and will be tough if he runs to form.

A Plus Tard is the “A” entry from the Henry de Bromhead yard. He won last year and was second two years ago, though he pulled up last time out, marking the first time he ever ran out of the top three.  It is also a concern that he is top-weighted, with seven to 19 pounds more than his foes have to lug: and eight more than when he was the second-highweight last year. All in all, he looks like an underlay this time around.

2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup Longer Shots

Ahoy Senor looks like a horse for this Cheltenham course,  winning the Cotswold (G2) last out and finishing second in a Grade 1 novice event last year. He is not the most consistent and he will have to find his best, but he is a whole stone under the top weight and on his best he is an interesting price candidate.

Minella Indo won the race two years ago and was second last year. The question is whether he is still quite as good, and the field he faced in the New Year’she h Day Chase (G3) last out was nothing like this group. However, he has an excellent history of turning in good efforts at Cheltenham, and he belongs in exotic wagers.

Stattler has a lot to find on the favorite but has a pair of good seconds this campaign behind Minella Indo and Galopin des Champs this season. He did win a novice chase at Cheltenham last year, and the weights could help him turn the tables on Minella Indo, making him another interesting one for the exotics.
