King’s Plate 2023 Picks, Odds, Tips

For anyone who enjoys betting top horse races around the world, there are few better events than the King’s Plate on Sunday, August 20 at Woodbine. The race drew a massive field: 17 horses in the main field, plus a pair of also-eligible entrants. The horses go 1 ¼ miles on the Tapeta main track for a $1 million purse and the honor of winning the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

The race is restricted to three-year-olds bred in Canada, as is the whole Triple Crown series in the country. The Canadian Triple Crown features three races on three different surfaces: the King’s Plate is on Tapeta at Woodbine, the Prince of Wales is on dirt at Fort Erie, and then the Breeders’ returns to Woodbine and is run on the grass.

King’s Plate Handicapping

Now that you have your online betting account set up, it is time to learn about the top contenders for the 2023 King’s Plate:

King’s Plate Best Bet

Elysian Field is the best bet for the King’s Plate. She comes out of a win in the Woodbine Oaks and now steps up to face males, but four of the last nine Plate winners have been fillies. Though she drew relatively inside in a 17-horse field, she drew near the inside in a 14-horse field last out and won with authority. With her ability to work a trip and pass horses, combined with pedigree to handle the stretch out, this Mark Casse trainee has a lot to recommend her.

King’s Plate Contenders

The other filly coming out of the Woodbine Oaks is Wickenheiser, and she has a solid chance to win the Plate as well. She rallied from near last to get up for second behind Elysian Field last out. She should get a sharp pace to close into once again, and her pedigree is as good as anyone here to stretch out to this ten-furlong trip. Plus, Rafael Hernandez rides; he often brings his best on big days at Woodbine.

Kalik will be favored off a Grade 2 win in the United States two starts ago, combined with the fact that this will be his first try against Canada-restricted company. That graded score came on grass, and he tries Tapeta for the first time. But, turf form often translates to Tapeta. And, though there is plenty of other speed signed on for the race, his maiden victory shows that he is not merely one-way speed.

King’s Plate Exotics Horses

Touch’n Ride is the least experienced horse in the field, with just two starts and no races against winners. He stepped forward nicely from his turf mile debut to his Tapeta route second out, and won decisively in that all-weather try July 30. He should be able to settle off the pace and make a run, and if he stretches out even further he should be able to run fast enough to find the frame.

Although Kaukokaipuu lost some ground late in the Marine (G3), his first try past seven furlongs, that was against graded (open) company and now he steps back to face Canada-breds again. His pedigree reads like one that should appreciate this trip, giving him upside to improve off that effort second out. He also has strong pace versatility; given all the speed in here combined with his near-outside post, don’t be surprised to see him revert to a midpack or closing style to good effect.
