Nest is coming into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in the most dazzling form. Though she and Secret Oath were trading off as leading three-year-olds earlier, two decisive wins at Saratoga against her own class and then a win in the Beldame (G2) versus older put Nest up. She has the tactical speed to get a trip, and she won the Ashland (G1) impressively at Keeneland.

Malathaat, the likely second choice, also has Keeneland form on her side. Last year’s Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner, she won the Ashland last year and has a total of three wins at Keeneland. The biggest question for her is that she sits a bit further off the pace, and horses up closer tend to do better routing at Keeneland. But, her consistency and great local form make her a fearsome contender.

The most confusing of the favorites is Clairiere. She looked like the rising talent of the division, beating Malathaat twice in New York this summer. But, she came up flat in the Personal Ensign (G1) after being fractious in the gate. She has rested since then and is a horse who tends to run very well first off a lay. However, her record at 1 ⅛ miles is less than stellar.

2022 Breeders’ Cup Distaff Exotic Longshots

The most interesting horse aside from the three marquee contenders is Society, who won the Cotillion (G1) against three-year-olds last out. She drew the outside and has sharp early speed, giving her a good chance to jump to the front and lead them around. She will have to improve, as she was well beaten behind Nest in July. But, she broke badly that day. With a cleaner break, she may try to steal this.

For a piece of the exotics, consider improving Blue Stripe as well. She was well beaten in the Distaff last year, but it was her first United States start after a career in Argentina. She has settled in well out west this year, winning a pair of graded stakes, including the Santa Margarita (G2) at 1 ⅛ miles. She needs a step forward from her Clement Hirsch win last out, but if she finds it, it does not take a massive step up to put her close to this group.

Search Results also could fit into those deeper exotics. She seems a cut below the top contenders like Nest and Malathaat, but she has never been off the board in her 11-race career, including three races at 1 ⅛ miles. This consistency gives her a right to find the exotics even at the Breeders’ Cup.
