Breeders’ Cup Distaff: Malathaat returns to Keeneland

The Breeders’ Cup is one of the most important race meetings of the year. And one of the top horse races to bet on during the Breeders’ Cup is the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Saturday, November 5 at Keeneland! The race covers a mile and an eighth on the dirt, and it drew a top-class field of eight fillies and mares.

Some of the best race mares in history, like Zenyatta and Beholder, have won the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. This year’s edition is certain to be competitive: leading three-year-olds Nest, Secret Oath, and Society will clash with proven older mares like Malathaat, Clairiere, and Search Results. The winner gets the inside track to an Eclipse award, as well as a rich reward!

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Handicapping

Now that you have created your betting account, it is time to get to know the top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff!

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Favorites

The likely favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff is three-year-old Nest. The daughter of Curlin hasn’t lost since finishing second behind the boys in the Belmont (G1). She defeated her own age group impressively twice at Saratoga, then unlike many three-year-olds nowadays, she has faced older already, romping just as easily in the Beldame (G2).

Though Nest is a good horse who can get a good trip, she hasn’t faced older horses quite like top distaff stars like Malathaat, who gets the narrow edge here. Not only has she been a consistent force in the older filly and mare division this year, but her three-for-three record at Keeneland means that she knows how to finish strongly over this course.

Clairiere is the other one likely to be in the group of favorites. She will be the longer price of the three, but it is a concern that she fired a clunker last out in the Personal Ensign (G1). It is also a concern that she has not done most of her best work at a mile and an eighth, the distance of the Distaff. Add to that the fact that she is closer, and this may not be her day. Stand against her.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Value Horses

The most interesting of the other runners is Society. Though Nest beat her soundly in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), Society broke poorly that day. With a better break, she looks like the speed of the speed. If she can clear longshot Awake at Midnyte, there is a strong possibility she is the one the rest of the field will have to try to catch.

Two others to consider for the exotics are Blue Stripe and Search Results. Blue Stripe, based in California this year, has more experience with American racing than she did when she ran off the board in the Distaff last year. She doesn’t need a huge step up from her Clement Hirsch (G1) to find the frame at a massive price.

Search Results has been a cut below the top of this division all year but has never finished off the board in eleven starts. She is tactical, she can take her race to multiple tracks, and she can stay the mile and an eighth.
